For my daughters 6th birthday she choose a baby chick theme because she got 4 baby chicks for her birthday present. She wanted a cute baby chick birthday cake. And I was good with this because I did not have a lot a time and two round circles seemed easy. Easy still takes hours but it was worth it because she loved this cake.
Steps to make Chick Cake
- Bake 4 9-inch round cakes. Back 3 6-inch round cakes. cut off tops so they are flat for stacking.
- Freeze cakes
- Get cakes out of freeze layer the 4 cakes with butter cream – freeze again. Do the same for the 3 6-inc cakes.
- When buttercream set up – carve the cakes in round shapes.
- Stack the two round sections – remember to put sticks/supports in the bottom half or your head will fall off!! (yes this has happened to me 🙂
- Now crumb coat and Freeze again (or put in the fridge like I had to do because my freezer is a drawer and does not take a tall stacked cake:))
- Remove from freezer and add a nice layer of buttercream
- Chill again
- Now roll out a large round piece of Yellow fondant – mine had a circumference of about 27 inches! It was difficult to lift up and put on the cake but I didn’t want to cover the two sections individually and try to smooth out a neck line.
- When you get that big piece of fondant on then start smoothing it down. Try to get the front of the cake smooth – you can make errors in the back because the wings of the chick can cover those! So aim for fondant folds or tears where you think those wings will go.
- Decorating this cake is easy.
- Two round circle of black fondant for the eyes
- Two wings towards the back cut from yellow fondant – I cut some paper ones 1st to figure out the size and then when I found the best size to cover the fondant folding messy mistakes in the back of the cake, I used the paper as my template for cutting the actual fondant. Then attach with buttercream.
- Cut some feet and make a beak out of orange fondant and attache with butter cream and a toothpick
- Make some eggshell triangles out of white fondant and attach around the bottom
- Add some pretty flowers – I bought these from the cake store! saved a LOT of time and looked great!
